According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Manchester United have emerged as the favourites in the race to sign Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
The 25 year-old has emerged as one of the most formidable enforcers in the Premier League since the Saints’ top flight ascension in 2012, last term averaging the second-most successful tackles per match, 3.7, of any player in the division.
That’s seen the 6 foot 2 midfielder continuously linked to Arsenal and Manchester United by the press, with a summer departure seemingly inevitable. Schneiderlin almost forced his way out of St. Mary’s last summer and he’s spent the last few months stalling on a new five-year deal that would make him the Saints’ top earner.
Yesterday morning, the France international revealed that he hopes to conclude negotiations regarding his future before pre-season training starts again at Southampton next week.
And according to the Mirror, it’s now Manchester United who are set to sign the former Strasbourg youngster, who Southampton allegedly value at £24million.
The rise of Francis Coquelin at the end of last season has convinced Arsene Wenger that Arsenal don’t need to spend big on a holding player. Meanwhile, dark horses Spurs believe they’re unlikely to sign Schneiderlin whilst Champions League clubs are courting his signature.
According to the Mirror, their sources are confident United will get the deal over the line before next week – making Schneiderlin their second signing of the summer after Memphis Depay.
