Raphael Varane

According to reports from The Telegraph this morning, Manchester United have launched an enquiry into the availability of prodigious Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

The France international has emerged as the complete centre-back package since arriving at the Bernabeu from Lens in summer 2011, boasting an eclectic mix of imperious athleticism, confidence in possession and an astute reading of the game. He’s already featured in Champions League finals and captained the France national team – at just 22 years of age.

Chelsea gaffer Jose Mourinho oversaw part of Varane’s development during his spell as Real Madrid boss and has since dubbed him ‘the best young defender in the world’, as reported by Sky Sports in March 2014. Resultantly, the 6 foot 3 defender has often been billed as a potential successor to ageing skipper John Terry at Stamford Bridge – as claimed by Mirror Football last year.

Currently, however, Manchester United are proving more proactive in the race for Varane’s signature. According to The Telegraph, who cite Spanish publication Marca, the Red Devils have made their interest known whilst negotiating the seemingly inevitable departure of PFA Player of the Year nominee David De Gea with the La Liga giants.

According to Marca, Varane wants a superior role within the Real Madrid squad and could request to leave if he’s not assured of one ahead of next season. That has coincided with reports claiming Rafa Benitez’s side may be forced to surrender the Frenchman as they enter the race for Red Devils target Nicolas Otamendi.

Currently, however, Los Blancos remain adamant Varane isn’t for sale.
