Chelsea, Man United, Bayern and Barca all chasing Uruguay defender

|

Diego Godin

According to reports from The Express yesterday afternoon, Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is being targeted by four top European clubs.

The 29 year-old has played a pivotal role in the Mattress Makers claiming a Europa League title, a Copa del Rey and a La Liga title over the last four campaigns, and also boasts an impressive 89 caps for Uruguay – helping them reach the World Cup semi-finals in South Africa in 2010.

That impressive accumulation of experience and accolades has attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, according to The Express. The Red Devils are known to be on the prowl for an experienced centre-half this summer, whilst Blues boss Jose Mourinho confirmed his intentions to sign a new defender earlier this week – as reported by ESPN.

But they may not be the only clubs interested in Godin this summer. As reported by The Express, former Juventus ace Paolo Montero – who made 186 league appearances for the Old Lady and 61 for Uruguay – believes Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also keen on his compatriot.

“Diego is currently the best centre-back in the world right now, perhaps joined by Giminez and Thiago Silva, ” he told Spanish publication Marca.

“We’re talking about a player who’s played at the highest level for some time now.

“It’s his professionalism, ability to read the game, get forward and score goals that makes him the most complete.

“He would have no problem playing for Barcelona while I understand Bayern Munich are interested, but he has stated he is happy to remain in Madrid,” he added.

Why are Chelsea continually being ‘linked’ with old defenders when we have got 4 of our own we should be trying to upgrade on? Both Godin and Miranda are both too old for us to go spending money oin them. Im not saying they arent good but whats the point buying them when we will need to look agin in 2 years. We should be looking at lads in theyre early to mid 20s so they can gel and play together for a few years.
