Raheem Sterling (3)

According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Real Madrid manager-in-waiting Rafa Benitez will make signing Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling his top priority in the transfer market this summer.

The former Liverpool gaffer, who paid £600k to bring the England international to Anfield from QPR’s academy in 2010, is expected to be officially announced as Bernabeu boss within the next few weeks. The agent of predecessor Carlo Ancelotti has claimed he’s 99% certain to take over – as reported by ESPN.

And the Mirror believe the departing Napoli gaffer is desperate to take advantage of Raheem Sterling’s contract situation this summer.

After Sterling revealed he’d turned down extension offers worth over £100k per-week during a candid interview with the BBC earlier this season, the 20 year-old’s agent, Aidy Ward, told The Evening Standard last week that he ‘wouldn’t sign for £900k per-week’, before branding Anfield-hero-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher ‘a knob’ – as This is Futbol revealed on Friday.

With his current deal set to expire in 2017, it’s more than likely the Merseysiders will decide to cash in on the winger-forward this summer before his value depreciates.

As This is Futbol revealed last week, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester City are all reported to be courting Sterling’s signature, with Liverpool valuing the 2014 Golden Boy winner at around £50million, but The Guardian claim Manchester United are also considering a summer bid – which would make Sterling the first player to move between the two north west rivals since Phil Chisnall in 1964.

Real Madrid, however, have a knack of eclipsing their rivals when pursuing European football’s biggest stars.
