According to reports from Mirror Football this afternoon, representatives of Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan are in London to negotiate a summer transfer to Manchester United.

The 27 year-old is widely regarded as one of the biggest talents outside of Europe’s leading top flights, as the talismanic playmaker of a Benfica side who have claimed back-to-back Primeira Liga titles and twice reached the Europa League final since the start of the 2012/13 campaign.

Chelsea are long-term admirers of the Argentina international, who boasts 30 goals in 213 appearances for The Eagles, but Manchester United are believed to be considerably closer to attaining his signature.

According to Mirror Football, who source Portuguese television channel CM TV, Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira and super agent Jorge Mendes – whose other clients include Jose Mourinho and Diego Costa – have arrived in England to negotiate Gaitan’s long-awaited move to the Premier League.

That would likely require the Red Devils activating the attacking midfielder’s release clause, which currently stands at £24.9million.
