Rui Patricio

According to reports from Mirror Football earlier this week, Liverpool are plotting a summer move for Sporting Lisbon’s Rui Patricio in a bid to provide some competition for Simon Mignolet’s No.1 jersey next season.

The Belgium international – who has often come under huge criticism himself – is currently deputised by Australian international Brad Jones. But he’s made just 11 Premier League appearances throughout his five-year Anfield career and is yet to extend a contract which expires in the summer.

Patricio has come to the attentions of Premier League clubs before. Back in summer 2013, he was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, as reported by The Express, but no formal bid ever materialised.

The 27 year-old stayed at Sporting instead, now boasting 320 appearances for the Primeira Liga outfit in addition to 36 caps for Portugal.

Regardless of whether Liverpool decide to keep Jones on, Mirror Football claim they’ll make a bid for the Portugal No.1. Under contract until 2018, however, Sporting are under no immediate obligation to sell.
