Nico Gaitan (Benfica)

According to reports from The Express yesterday afternoon, Premier League table-toppers Chelsea sent scouts to watch Benfica’s Nicolas Gaitan over the weekend – the diminutive midfielder known to be a long-term target for Manchester United.

Boasting 21 goals in 121 league appearances, Gaitan has become a pivotal cog in the Aguias starting Xi since signing for Benfica from Boca Juniors in summer 2010, going on to claim three Taca de Ligas, last term’s Primeira Liga title and runner-up finishes in the last two Europa League tournaments – losing in the final to Chelsea in 2013 and Sevilla in 2014 – with the Stadium of Light outfit.

Despite only representing Argentina on nine occasions, scoring twice, Gaitan is considered to be one of the top talents outside of Europe’s leading top flights, and would resultantly set any suitor back around £30million – according to The Express once again.

And whilst Man United are known admirers, having allegedly made inquiries regarding the attacking midfielder last January, Chelsea scouts watched the 27 year-old help Benfica secure a 5-1 win over Academica on Saturday.

They claim manager Jose Mourinho is preparing a summer bid.
