Why Manchester United need to close this £19.7m deal:

One of this Premier League season’s biggest disappointments has to be Angel Di Maria. The Argentine ace’s sending off against Arsenal last week was emblematic of his time thus far at Manchester United. He’s been hugely disappointing, he hasn’t produced the goods and his mentality is questionable.

Of course, things wouldn’t be quite so bad if he didn’t have a £59.7m price-tag hanging over his head. That kind of valuation tends to put a lot of pressure on your shoulders. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that Di Maria has managed to deal with this additional responsibility particularly well.

His failings could lead to a rather interesting summer for The Red Devils. With Manchester United lacking in cut and thrust, will Louis Van Gaal look to add another winger to his squad?

I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see him do exactly that. Indeed, according to The Metro, Manchester United are already ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign PSV’s wing-wizard, Memphis Depay. If this deal goes through it will prove to be a very smart piece of business on the part of Van Gaal.

Depay is one of the most exciting young talents in Europe. At just 21-years-old, he’s already managed to earn a fantastic goal-scoring record. Last season, he scored 14 goals in 23 performances. This season, he’s done even better finding the back of the next 22 times in 27 appearances. For a winger, this is a particularly good return.

It’s easy to see why Manchester United might want to bring him to the Premier League.

Now there’s just the matter of his price tag. According to the aforementioned source, Depay would set Manchester United back £19.7m. That’s a lot of money for a young player, but I’d argue that it would be money well spent.

This is an area that Manchester United need to strengthen and he’s one of the best options available. He’s also going to be around for a long time to come. This deal would make a lot of sense. Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal also sees things this way.
