Samir HandanovicWith the future of Manchester United’s number one shot-stopper in question, Louis Van Gaal continues to pick up links to new goalkeepers. David De Gea can’t seem to shake off claims that a move to Real Madrid awaits him in the future. With this in mind, The Red Devils can’t really afford to sit still.

Yes, they’ve got Victor Valdes waiting in the wings, but the former Barcelona man is just returning after a lengthy injury lay-off. It would be a mistake to rush him into action before he’s ready. Manchester United can’t afford to have an out-of-form goalkeeper between the sticks. This is especially true given the current state of their defense.

Besides, even if Victor Valdes was to be promoted to Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper in David De Gea’s absence, the club would still need a high quality number two goalie.

This leads me onto The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are now ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign Inter Milan’s world renowned goalkeeper, Samir Handanovic. The Slovenian international (74 caps) has been a major hit in Italian football.

He made 182 appearances for Udinese between 2004 and 2012. In 2011, he even managed to equal an all-time record for most penalties saved in one season (6). His performances earned him a move to Inter Milan, where he’s managed to establish himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in the game.

A move to Manchester United could be the next logical step. At 30-years-old, this could prove to be the last big move of his career.

The aforementioned source claims that The Red Devils could sign Handanovic for £16.2m. That’s a fair price for a top player. What’s more, that kind of fee would doubtless be within Manchester United’s financial reach. Perhaps they could use the money from selling David De Gea (were that to happen) to close this particular deal?

What’s your take? Do Manchester United need to consider their options in this part of the pitch? Would Samir Handanovic be a good choice?
