Mateo KovacicArsenal aren’t short of midfielders at the moment, but things won’t always be this way. There’s a good chance that they’ll cut ties with Abou Diaby in the near future. Will Tomas Rosicky hang around for much longer if he’s not getting game time? Could Mikel Arteta’s injury problems force Arsene Wenger into a sale? Might Santi Cazorla be tempted into a move back to La Liga?

It’s also worth noting that a lot of fans (and pundits) have been disappointed by what they’ve seen from Mesut Ozil. Getting a little bit of competition in this area of the park could help to keep things fresh.

Still, it makes sense that Arsenal would look to bring in some youth. If they were to sign a new player in this area of the pitch, it would need to be somebody who would understand that they wouldn’t necessarily have a starting berth in the first team.

This brings me to The Gunners interest in Inter Milan 20-year-old prodigy, Mateo Kovacic. According to The Metro, Arsenal have been given the green light to sign him and the Serie A side are ready and willing to sell up. Things seem to be moving pretty quickly here.

Kovacic is a deep-lying play maker who has been compared by some to former Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas. Still, it’s worth noting that Croatian’s goal-scoring record is better than Fabrega’s was at his age. In 33 games this season, Kovacic has found the back of the net 8 times.

He’s clearly a player with a huge amount of potential. It’s easy to see why The Gunners might be interested.

Still, he’s not going to come cheap. According to the aforementioned source, Everton have already had a £14.6m bid batted away. It’s thought that £17.2m could be enough to close the deal. That kind of figure is certainly within Arsenal’s financial reach.

It just remains to be seen if Arsene Wenger is ready and willing to spend big on an area of the pitch that he may not see as a priority.

What’s your take? Is Mateo Kovacic a good option for The Gunners? Should they be looking at further midfield recruits?

Mateo Kovacic would be one of those players Wenger could turn into a world class player. I think it will be hard for Kovacic to develop a lot more at Inter. He has a lot of strength for a creative midfield playerand is like a cross between Fabregas and Ramsey. Arsenal should get him….NOW.
