Raphael VaraneI think it’s fair to say that we know what Manchester United’s key priority in the summer transfer window is going to be. Since last summer they’ve needed to sign up a new centre-back (or two). Their inability to bring in the right players has seriously undermined the club’s efforts this season.

What was Louis Van Gaal expecting? Was he hoping that a Manchester United side that had just cut ties with both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic would just pick up where they left off? Why did he prioritize fixing his club’s attack at the expense of his defense?

As things currently stand, The Red Devils are severely unbalanced. As soon as the summer transfer window rolls by, I expect that this will change. Manchester United do keep getting linked to Real Madrid’s star centre-back, Raphael Varane, after all.

The French youngster is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in world football and he’s only 21-years-old. Despite his youth, he’s already made 101 appearances for Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in Europe. He’s also a regular for the French international team, where he’s managed to accrue 17 caps. Not bad, eh?

What’s most impressive about Varane is how comfortable he is, whether he’s on the ball or off it. He’s great at winning it back, challenging in the air and diffusing dangerous situations. Once he’s in possession he distributes the ball neatly and quickly. He’s the real deal and I’m sure he’d be a good fit for a Premier League club.

Of course, talent like this doesn’t come cheap. According to The Metro, Real Madrid are willing to sell their defensive talent for £22m. Still, the source also suggests that Louis Van Gaal has ordered his transfer brokers to offer £30m in order to shut out the competition and close the deal as quickly as possible.

It looks like The Red Devils are serious about this one. Manchester United are on the verge of an excellent piece of business – one that could put them right back on the map.

What’s your take? How much should Manchester United be willing to pay for Raphael Varane?
