No matter how bad things have got, Manchester United have always been able to put Arsenal to the sword, particularly at Old Trafford. They’re the side that ended The Invincibles 49 game run and ever since they’ve been The Gunners’ bogey team. Arsenal even managed to make David Moyes look good last season.
That was until last week, when Arsenal managed to undo their Old Trafford curse and secure a 2-1 victory over The Red Devils. Whilst Louis Van Gaal’s team wasn’t comprehensively out-played, they were out worked. Indeed, the result casts Manchester United’s entire season in a new light.
Up until that defeat, The Red Devils had done a passable job. They were in with a shot of winning silverware and a top four finish looked to be on the cards. Now they’re fighting for a slot in next season’s Champions League and precious little else. It’s hugely disappointing.
The one benefit of this poor showing is that it will likely necessitate major action. I’m sure Louis Van Gaal will be given a hefty chunk of change to spend this summer. Let’s hope he doesn’t splurge it all on his attack, like he did last time around.
I’d like to see him move in for FC Porto’s talented right back, Danilo. As it happens, The Metro claim that Manchester United have already made a £28.25m bid for the Brazilian ace. It looks like things are moving along at a rapid clip. The summer transfer window won’t be open for quite some time yet, but The Red Devils are already making inroads.
The Brazilian has 11 caps for his international side and he’s already playing a key role for his club side. All this and he’s just 23-years-old. The aforementioned source notes that he has a £37m release clause written into his FC Porto contract, but also claims that he may be available for less. Perhaps that £28.25m bid will suffice?
Let’s hope so any way. Manchester United need a little inspiration from somewhere.
