Chelsea may be on the verge of claiming this season’s Premier League title in rather dominant fashion, but retaining it for another year is a different challenge all together.
Only two managers have successfully defended the Premier League title before – Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho – and no club has done it since Manchester United in 2008 and 2009.
Thus, entering the summer window, the west Londoners must be ruthless regarding their personnel. And one weak link that’s emerged in recent months is centre-back Gary Cahill; schooled by Harry Kane in the 5-3 defeat to Tottenham, nowhere to be found as Bradford put four past Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup and amateurishly flat-footed when attempting to stop Edinson Cavani head past the Blues in Paris.
With John Terry also edging closer towards retirement, some fresh blood at the heart of Chelsea’s defence certainly wouldn’t go amiss this summer.
