Manchester United have been keeping an eye on PSV starlet, Memphis Depay, for quite a while now. It’s enough to make you wonder if a summer move could be on the cards.
‘If Depay ends up going to Liverpool I’ll seriously consider ending my life.’
Smart, well considered stuff, right? Why Memphis Depay would favourite this tweet is beyond me. Still, the fact that he did (before later unfavouriting it) has caused a great deal of speculation. Does this mean that he’ll be staying at PSV? Or can we take an even bigger leap and land at the conclusion that he’d prefer to move to Liverpool’s great rivals, Manchester United?
This is all speculation at the moment, though the aforementioned source does claim that the 21-year-old has ‘indicated’ that he’d like Old Trafford to be his next destination. If that’s true (as the signs seem to suggest), then that’s great news for Manchester United fans.
After all, Depay is one of the most exciting young footballers in the world. Over the last two seasons he’s played 70 games for PSV and he’s found the back of the net 36 times. This is an amazing return for a winger, especially given his age. He’s also chipped in with a lot of assists and his general build-up play is great.
Louis Van Gaal will know him well from his time as manager of the Holland international team. He’ll know that he’s lightning quick, technically gifted and frighteningly effective in the final third. When you contrast him to a player like Angel Di Maria, the difference is clear for all to see.
The Express claim that Manchester United could wrap up a deal for Depay for as little as £21m. That’s a bargain fee for a player who’s potential is more or less boundless. This Dutchman has the potential to blossom into one of the best footballers in the world over the next three-or-four years.
Getting in on the bottom floor here looks like a smart move.
What’s your take? Would Memphis Depay favour a move to Manchester United over Liverpool? Should Van Gaal seal the deal?
