Were Manchester United right to let Anderson go?

AndersonHow can a player survive eight years at Old Trafford without proving his worth? The man I’m referring to, of course, is Manchester United’s Brazilian star, Anderson. He’s now been a Premier League player for the best part of a decade. What a remarkable feat.

During this time, he’s played underneath smart managers like Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes (who’s doing pretty well in La Liga) and Louis Van Gaal. Despite this, he’s been given chance after chance. On each occasion, he’s managed to find new and inventive ways to disappoint.

There’s always been something just a little too casual about his style of play. When he first arrived in England, most pundits assumed he would operate as a flying box-to-box midfielder. As it happens, this was never to be the case. On the rare occasion when he plays, he tends to sit in the middle of the park and hit long balls. Some of them come off, but most don’t.

He’s never been all that effective and his lack of application has exacerbated his bad reputation. We’ve now reached a stage where it’s surprising that he’s lasted so long.

Last season whilst on loan with Fiorentina, Anderson played just seven times. This season things have been even slower: Anderson has only made two appearances for Manchester United this season and he hasn’t featured since August. To describe him as out of favour would be an understatement. In the lead-up to the January transfer window, it had begun to look as though his number was finally up.

That’s proven to be the case. It was recently revealed that Anderson had been allowed to cancel his Manchester United contract so that he could move to Brazilian side Internacional as part of a free transfer. It’s telling that this was the only way that Van Gaal and co. could get rid of him.

The Red Devils are better off without Anderson. He contributed very little, took up a place in the squad and hoovered up a healthy salary. He’ll probably fade into mediocrity now, but Manchester United look ready to burst back into the big time.

What’s your take? Were Manchester United right to let Anderson go?
