Jose Luis GayaArsenal have already wrapped up their first major January deal, but if The Metro are to be believed, there’s more to come. Arsene Wenger finally seems to have realised that there’s a major weakness with his squad. Whilst he’s able to call upon a number of decent attacking options, the same can’t be said of his defense. It’s the one area of the team where he just doesn’t have enough options.

That’s why he snapped up Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal. It’s also the reason why The Gunners continue to pick up links to Valencia’s well-regarded young left-back, Jose Luis Gaya. Arsene Wenger must view the Spaniard as the right man to round out his defense.

After all, he can already call upon the likes of Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal. Perhaps Arsene Wenger is looking for as much strength in depth down the left as he has down the right (where he can call upon Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers, Hector Bellerin and Carl Jenkison (who’s currently on loan at West Ham)).

Or perhaps he just views Jose Luis Gaya as the kind of outrageous talent that needs to be snapped up, regardless of the options he already has. There’s good reason to believe that this is true. After all, at just 19-years-old, he’s already regarded as one of the best defenders in La Liga. Indeed, outside of Real Madrid and Barcelona, there are few players who can match his reputation.

That’s why he already has a £13.5m price-tag (despite his relative youth). If Arsene Wenger is genuinely interested, he’s not going to come cheap. There’s not a lot of time left in the January transfer window. The Gunners need to act soon or risk seeing Luis Gaya’s valuation sky-rocket over the coming months.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how The Professor handles this situation. I’m hoping that Arsenal end up with yet another new defender among their ranks before the transfer window slams shut.

What’s your take? Is Jose Luis Gaya the right option for The Gunners? Can they close a deal in time?
