Is it too late for Arsenal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin?

SchneiderlinThroughout last summer, The Gunners were strongly linked to Southampton’s star midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin. The Frenchman had impressed during his first season in the Premier League and it looked like he’d end up being a part of the mass exodus out of St Mary’s.

As it happened, he hung around, only to pick up more links to Arsenal during the January transfer window. Unfortunately, big deals don’t tend to go down during that month, so a deal never came to fruition.

Could things be different next summer?

According to The Metro, Arsenal are ‘refusing to admit defeat’ in their attempts to sign Morgan Schneiderlin. The source suggests that Arsene Wenger will move back in for the Frenchman this coming summer. Third time’s the charm, right?

One thing’s for sure: if Arsenal are still interested, they’re going to face one hell of a battle to sign the Frenchman. He’s currently playing a key role in Ronald Koeman’s team and his price-tag continues to rise and rise.

There’s no doubting his ability. Beyond, Nemanja Matic, I’m not sure there’s anybody better than him in his position in the Premier League. He’s tall, he’s physically commanding and he works extremely hard. He covers a lot of ground in each and every game, breaks up opposition play and allows Southampton to dominate possession.

He can also be pretty handy moving forward. He’s confident in possession and uses the ball well. He’s even chipped in with 3 goals this season (in just 13 appearances). It’s easy to see why The Gunners are still interested.

If Arsenal manage to sign him, they’ll have two quality defensive midfielders in their squad (Schneiderlin and Francis Coquelin). This would be a significant step up over the likes of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta (who should be playing further up field).

There’s no word as to how much he’s going to cost, but he isn’t going to come cheap. Arsene Wenger is going to have to play hard if he’s to secure this one.

What’s your take? Is Morgan Schneiderlin still the right man for The Gunners?
