With the transfer window all but closed, Manchester United don’t have too much longer to wrap up their January business. I think it’s fair to say that fans would have been hoping for a little bit more action thus far.
The Red Devils have been better than they were last year, but they’ve still been below par. Even with Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao in their squad they’re still some way off of their best.
Part of the problem lies with their defense. Last summer a decision was made to let both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic go – two of United’s most important and experienced players. Without them in tow, The Red Devils are a completely different (slightly less effective) defensive unit.
Unsurprisingly, they’ve been linked to a number of top quality defenders this January. But who are they actually going to sign?
My hope is that the rumours concerning Manchester United’s interest in Paris Saint Germain star, Marquinhos, are true. The player’s agent certainly seems to think there’s something going on. Check out these comments from Giuliano Bertolucci:
‘Last summer, the president of PSG declared a transfer for Marquinhos non-negotiable. We’ll see what his position is next summer. Many clubs are interested. Manchester United is one of them, it’s true.’ (Source: The Metro)
These rumours seem to have been triggered by the young Brazilian’s lack of regular game-time in Paris. With David Luiz and Thiago Silva running the show, Marquinhos has only made 12 Ligue 1 appearances for his side this season. A player with this much talent really shouldn’t be playing second fiddle.
The Metro suggest that Marquinhos is currently valued at £24m. There’s no doubt that this is a lot of money, but the figure probably falls within The Red Devils’ financial wheelhouse.
If Louis Van Gaal is on the hunt for a quality centre-back (and has the cash ready), perhaps he ought to get in touch with Laurent Blanc.
