Is it time for Liverpool to part ways with Simon Mignolet?

Simon MignoletIt can’t be easy being a Liverpool goalkeeper. After all, you’re lumped behind a leaky defense, thrust into high-pressure situations and you’re then subjected to extreme scrutiny whenever a goal is conceded.

Unfortunately for Simon Mignolet, he’s struggled to rise to the occasion this season. Even accounting for Liverpool’s somewhat lacklustre defense, the big Belgian has been hugely disappointing this season.

When he first arrived at the club, he did so with a good reputation. He’d done a fantastic job at Sunderland and looked ready for a move to a big club. As it happens, he did put in a number of decent performances during his first season at the club, keeping The Reds in some games that they might have lost if not for his safe hands.

Unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers, that hasn’t been the case this time around. Mistakes have crept into his game with alarming regularity. Whether he’s rushing out of goal, parrying the ball into bad areas or carelessly spilling shots, he’s managed to find plenty of novel ways to frustrate Liverpool fans.

With Brad Jones proving to be a pretty unimpressive replacement, The Reds were linked to a number of different keepers during the January transfer window. As you’re aware, Brendan Rodgers didn’t sign any of them. That’s unfortunate.

Still, Mignolet remains optimistic. Check out his recent comments: “You know that there is always a spotlight on top of you. You are always going to be under pressure but on the other hand it’s our job and you get used to it. So it’s not really pressure, it’s something more that you enjoy. Everybody likes to play in front of a big crowd, everybody likes to play in the big games. It’s something you enjoy and something actually that you relish to do.” (Source: The Metro)

Whilst I admire his attitude, I’m not sure whether this is going to be enough to save his Liverpool career. Liking pressure is one thing, but performing well under pressure is something else. Unless the Belgian stopper can do the latter, he’s going to get put out to pasture.

This summer’s sure to be an interesting time for The Reds. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them snap up a new keeper.

What’s your take? Is Simon Mignolet still the man for Liverpool?

Mignolet has been outstanding for the last couple of months. Whoever wrote this clearly doesn’t watch Liverpool play. Mignolet has been a huge part of the Reds resurgence and has been racking up clean sheets, commanding his box and making no mistakes. Click bait article.
