Is Emmanuel Adebayor still worth backing?

Emmanuel AdebayorSince the beginning of his career, Emmanuel Adebayor has always had problems with motivation. He’s one of the most casual footballers you’ll ever see. Nobody doubts his talent. To do so would be foolish. Every time you dare to suggest that he’s a poor footballer, he usually responds with a sublime goal, or a neat moment of skill. Unfortunately, he coasts by on those moments for too long and offers too little in-between them.

The problem is with his attitude. He scored 66 goals in 142 games for Arsenal (including 30 in 48 back in 2007/08, the best season of his career), but his inconsistency (and his contractual situation) meant that he had to go.

At City, he struggled to breakthrough among all the other talent at the club. The same thing happened at Real Madrid. Tottenham looked like a good fit for the Togolese forward, but old habits have begun to creep into his game. His languid, casual style often comes off as laziness. His lack of diligence has turned Spurs fans against him.

It’s amazing that a man who has scored 41 times for Tottenham (in as few as 106 games), is so widely disliked. The fans just want more from him. They want him to play like these games mean something to him.

Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t seem to be a big fan of Emmanuel Adebayor. The former Southampton man was even willing to let him go during the January transfer window and it looks like there were plenty of potential suitors. Check out these comments from the big man himself:

‘I had five good clubs in my hand and brought that down to three. Finally I decided which one I wanted to go to. Unluckily, Mr Levy was against it because the club could not be a rival which I wanted to go to. So I stayed here and I am very happy to stay and to do my job.’ (Source: The Express)

Yikes. That ‘unluckily’ doesn’t read particularly well, does it? If he played without conviction before, how’s he going to play for the rest of the season?

He’s not a player you can bank on. He hasn’t been for some time now. Tottenham deserve better. Let’s hope that Mauricio Pochettino is already looking to the future and lining up replacements.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Emmanuel Adebayor?

He’s worth asking to leave until a buyer can be found. His attitude won’t be any good around what seem to be a bunch of hungry young guys in the academy, while his performances for the first XI don’t warrant him being anywhere near the squad.
