DepayWe’re still a long way away from the summer transfer window, but it’s hard not to start pining for the future already. After all, what Manchester United are currently cooking up on the football pitch is hugely disappointing.

The Red Devils have just come off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City. In the run-up to that game, they’ve been inconsistent and unconvincing. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United were aggressive, relentless and effective. With Louis Van Gaal in charge, they look like the lack proper direction.

As a result, Manchester United could really use a chance to play the transfer window one more time. Van Gaal spent a lot in the summer, but he didn’t build a team. Now he’s going to have to have to rectify that.

I hope he starts by adding a little more threat down the flanks. The Red Devils have stood by players like Antonio Valencia (who’s now been converted into a right back), Ashley Young and Nani (who has been loaned out) for too long.

As it happens, Louis Van Gaal has been strongly linked with a move for PSV’s star performer, Memphis Depay. The Manchester United boss will know the Dutch winger well from his time as boss of the Netherlands international team.

Last season, Depay played 43 games for PSV and found the back of the net 14 times. This season he’s done even better. He’s played 27 games and he’s scored 21 goals. That gives him one of the best strike-rates in Europe and he’s a winger not a striker.

Interestingly enough, The Mirror recently published an article claiming that Manchester United aren’t the only club interested in signing Memphis Depay. The source suggests that their cross-town rivals, Manchester City, are also in the hunt. That’s a mark of the player’s quality.

The Express claim that Depay could be available for £22m. That’s a lot of money, but it’s good value for a player of his talent. He’s clearly set for big things, I just hope that he achieves them in a United shirt and not a City one.

What’s your take? Should Louis Van Gaal beat Manuel Pellegrini to this star winger?
