DepayThe Red Devils aren’t lacking for talent down the flanks. When you look at the players Manchester United have in this area of the pitch, it’s surprising that this team doesn’t have more cut and thrust going forward.

On an individual level, they’re pretty good. Antonio Valencia is physically tough, pacey and smart. For some reason, however, he’s been converted into a wing-back, which is neutering his ability to get into advanced areas of the pitch. Ashley Young is capable of good moments too, but he’s way too inconsistent.

This has meant that there’s a lot of pressure heaped on Angel Di Maria. If he doesn’t perform, then who does? Unfortunately for The Red Devils, the Argentine has struggled at times with the weight of expectation. He’s capable of moments of magic, but he can be frustrating too.

With this in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Louis Van Gaal target a new winger in the summer transfer window. Maybe he’ll finally seal a deal for long-term transfer target, Memphis Depay.

Indeed, The Metro claim that Manchester United have been ‘handed a boost’ in their attempts to sign the Dutch wing-wizard. He’s currently playing for PSV and his boss, Philip Cocu, has admitted that it’s going to be difficult to keep hold of him on a long-term basis. Check out this quote: ‘Yes, I think he’s going to leave PSV after this season.’

There’s a good reason for this. Depay has been hugely effective over the last two seasons and he’s still only 21-years-old. Last season he played 43 games and scored 14 goals. This year he’s done even better, making 27 appearances and finding the back of the net 21 times. This kind of return for a winger is almost unheard of.

Is it any wonder that Manchester United are interested? Memphis Depay could help The Red Devils to compete at the top level once again. He’s more than good enough to ease the creative burden that’s currently being heaped on Angel Di Maria. Let’s hope that Louis Van Gaal gives the youngster an opportunity to prove this.

What’s your take? Is Memphis Depay a must-buy for Manchester United?
