Would this £60m sensation really be a ‘waste of money’ for Arsenal?

Cavani 1In recent times, there has (rather bizarrely) been a lot of talk about a potential Arsenal deal for Paris Saint Germain’s world-class centre-forward, Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan ace is one of the deadliest strikers in world football, so from that perspective alone, it’s a little difficult to picture him in an Arsenal shirt.

This is especially true given the player’s £60m price-tag. With The Gunners in desperate need of signing one or two new defenders, it’s not like they’ve got a lot of money to play with. This must surely be why The Metro recently published an article claiming that Arsene Wenger would be wasting his money if he were to sign Cavani at that kind of price.

The source suggests that a £40m deal might be better value for money. Given how much PSG spent on the player when they signed him, I find it very unlikely that they’d be willing to take a loss if they were to send him packing. It’s not like he hasn’t been a hit in Paris. Thus far he’s been in sensational form.

In 65 games for Laurent Blanc’s side, he’s scored 38 games. That’s especially impressive when you consider that he’s often thrust out wide to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It’s not quite as impressive as the 104 goals he got in 138 games for Napoli, but still.

Imagine if Arsenal had two world class footballers playing upfront: Alexis Sanchez and Edinson Cavani. Playing alongside almost-there talent like Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla, you can bet that this attack would score plenty of goals. What’s more, Cavani is the kind of striker who will work hard for his team, win the ball back, hassle defenders and win things in the air.

He’s a bit like Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez rolled into one (though he’s not as quick or technically gifted as the Chilean).

£60m is a lot of money, but providing Arsene Wenger can bring a defender or two in on the cheap (West Ham’s Winston Reid and Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar are both approaching the end of their contracts), it’s hard to argue against Arsenal spending it.

It’s the kind of deal that could bring Arsenal up to Chelsea and Manchester City’s level. Wouldn’t that be money well spent?

What’s your take? Is Edinson Cavani worth his £60m price-tag?
