NetoLiverpool’s season has been a showcase for all the weaknesses within their squad. First we discovered that they don’t have enough options upfront, as Mario Balotelli  has struggled to adapt to his new team. Then we started to panic about a future without Steven Gerrard. Who would provide the goods from the centre-of-the-park without their talisman providing them with impetus?

Finally, there’s been some concern over the club’s current goalkeeping situation. At the moment, I’d argue that Liverpool’s first two options in this area of the pitch are a little bit pants.

When Simon Mignolet first joined the club, he looked like the perfect addition. He was in excellent form for Sunderland and he had plenty of Premier League experience. Unfortunately, he hasn’t made the step-up in class. This season has been littered with errors from the big Belgian. He just can’t seem to stop giving goals away and it’s costing The Reds big time.

Brad Jones isn’t must better. As such, I’m sure that Brendan Rodgers will be keen to take to the January transfer window in order to find a better solution.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Reds are ‘hoping’ to snap up Fiorentina’s well regarded and aptly named young goalkeeper, Neto. The Brazilian is known for his acrobatic reflexes, his speed of thought and his remarkable shot-stopping ability. At just 25-years-old (that’s relatively young for a good keeper), he also manages command his area with some vigour.

I think he’d marshal Liverpool’s defense a little better than Simon Mignolet currently does, once the language barrier has been overcome.

Besides, Neto has a £2m price-tag. It’s not like Brendan Rodgers needs to break the bank to sign him. He’s young but experienced and he’s well thought of on the international scene. The Reds have very little to lose here.

Here’s hoping that Brendan is ready to put pen to paper.

What’s your take? Is Neto a good option for The Reds? Should Liverpool stand by Simon Mignolet?
