Should Liverpool replace Steven Gerrard with this £23.5m Serie A sensation?

I can’t be the only one who feels that Liverpool have backed themselves into a corner with their recent activity. In fact, I just need to look at Jamie Carragher’s timeline for confirmation that I’m not alone.

Brendan Rodgers and co. managed to alienate Steven Gerrard, English football’s ultimate one-club man and now he’s on his way to the MLS in the summer. It’s all happened so quickly that it’s proven to be difficult to process.

Why would The Reds let their talisman leave the club? Why would Liverpool let their top goal-scorer slip through their grasp (especially when they’re short of goals upfront)? Are they ready for life without Stevie G?

There are a lot of questions that need to be answered. Either way, let’s hope that Liverpool are putting plans in place to deal with his absence.

Right on cue, The Metro have published an article, suggesting that Liverpool are preparing a £23.5m bid for Roma’s star midfielder, Miralem Pjanic, who they position as a replacement for Steven Gerrard.

In truth, Pjanic and Gerrard are two different kinds of midfielders. Gerrard has always been an all-rounder who contributes to every aspect of play (that’s what makes him so brilliant), whilst Pjanic is more technically minded. He can thread a pass, but I wouldn’t expect to see him making too many lung-busting runs, or slamming into too many challenges.

Still, he’s more than worthy of his £23.5m price-tag. He’s a sensational talent, who’d be sure to make an impact in the Premier League. If he can’t help to unlock the dormant potential of Mario Balotelli, then I’m not sure who can.

Whether The Reds have enough money to close this deal remains to be seen, but I’d certainly like to see Rodgers try. Only by looking to the future can Liverpool move past Steven Gerrard’s exit. Let’s hope that Pjanic is a part of this future.
