Should Liverpool cash-in on this £5m star?

Lucas LeivaI think it’s fair to say that Lucas Leiva has been underrated by fans and pundits alike during his time with Liverpool.

Since moving to Anfield in 2007, the Brazilian ace has accrued 8 seasons worth of action for the The Reds. In total he’s played in 262 games for Liverpool. Regardless of how you feel about him, there’s no doubting that he’s a highly experienced individual who has been with the club through thick and thin.

He’s been subject to a fair amount of criticism during his time with the club, but this has largely been down to his injury record. The Brazilian has had his fair share of long-term lay-offs throughout his stay in English football. How is he supposed to show his best form, when he’s rarely ever able to string more than one-or-two games together?

That being said, I’d argue that he’s been in good form this year, putting in some tough, combative performances in the centre-of-the-park. Whilst The Reds haven’t been overly impressive from an attacking point-of-view, when Lucas has played he’s helped his club to control possession and he’s mopped up opposition attacks before they’ve had a chance to form properly.

It’s also worth pointing out that at 29-years-old, Lucas is one of The Reds’ oldest, most experienced players. He’s a leader in a squad that seems to need leaders. Surely Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t want to get rid of this sort of expertise, would he? Not when he’s also set to lose Steven Gerrard in the summer.

So why do The Metro claim that Lucas Leiva could be on his way to Inter Milan for as little as £5m? Even if The Reds were prepared to sell, that price seems to be way below his current market value.

Inter Milan have been on something of a spending spree this January, but I hope they steer clear of Lucas Leiva. He’s still got two-or-three years left at the top level and The Reds really should be doubling down on defensive talent, not letting their best players go.

As the only natural defensive midfielder at the club, The Reds need to do what they can in order to keep hold of him.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool cash-in on Lucas Leiva?
