Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Aston Villa v Newcastle United - Villa ParkIn their hunt to find a new defensive midfielder, The Gunners have been linked to a number of rather expensive footballers. The names that immediately come to mind are William Carvalho (who currently plays for Sporting Lisbon) and Morgan Schneiderlin (who must be glad that he stayed at Southampton last summer). These are players who would cost Arsenal more than £20m.

Arsene Wenger would need to break the bank. But he doesn’t need to. There are players out there who are more affordable, just as good and are more willing to play for Arsenal. I haven’t heard a wink from either Schneiderlin or Carvalho suggesting that they’d enjoy a move to The Emirates. Newcastle United star Moussa Sissoko, on the other hand… well, he can’t seem to shut up about it.

Check out these comments from the Frenchman: “England remains my priority. If (Arsenal boss) Arsene Wenger calls me? We will have a discussion man to man. Arsenal has always been the club of my heart.”

Better still, The Metro, who carried the quotes, also suggest that Sissoko could be available for as little as £15m. That’s significantly less than The Gunners could have to pay for the other key options that they’ve been linked to. They’d be getting a player who actually wants to play for Arsenal at a decent price. That seems like a good deal for me.

As it happens, he’s a good player as well. He’s a stocky, athletic presence who works extremely hard in each and every game. There’s a reason why he’s earned 25 caps for the French international team. Wherever you slot him into your team, he tends to produce the goods. I would be surprised if he were to prove to be a very effective defensive midfielder for Arsenal.

Whilst the comparisons to Patrick Viera may be a little overblown, he does look like a good option. Let’s hope that he’s on Arsene Wenger’s wish-list.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal make a move for this £15m talent?
