Liverpool have been a much improved side over the last two-or-three weeks, but they’re still clearly lacking in certain areas of the pitch. This is particularly true upfront, where they look a little slight thanks to Daniel Sturridge’s injury issues.
I had expected to see The Reds get linked to more fresh attacking talent this January, but things have been relatively quiet thus far. Perhaps Brendan Rodgers did all his spending last summer?
I certainly hope that this isn’t the case. If Liverpool want to finish in the top four this season (and they should be aiming for at least this high a finish, after last year’s antics), it strikes me that they need to make at least one more signing.
With this in mind, I was a little disappointed to see The Metro claim that Tottenham are ‘set to sign’ Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka as part of a £7m deal. Why is this disappointing? Largely because Yevhen has been a Liverpool target for the last twelve months. Some believed that Brendan Rodgers was interested in him last January. The interest continued into the summer. Apparently, it hasn’t persisted in 2015.
Last season, Konoplyanka scored 13 goals in 36 performances for Dnipro FC. Things have been slightly slower this time around as he’s only found the back of the net 4 times in 20 games. Still, it’s clear enough that he’s a talented individual. He’s lightning quick, loves to take players on and often gets in behind. Once he’s through, he’s smart enough to make the right decision and draw blood in the final third.
At 25-years-old, he’s just about to hit his peak. Why wouldn’t Liverpool be interested in a player of this calibre, especially if he’s available for just £7m?
Still, The Reds loss could be Tottenham’s gain. It looks like they’re going to get a great player at a bargain price. Liverpool, on the other hand, are in danger of getting left behind in the race for fourth.
