Is Divock Origi really worth £13.3m to Liverpool?

OrigiIt’s hard to understand why Liverpool’s strikers have been firing blanks this season. None of The Reds’ current options are a patch on Luis Suarez, but they’re decent enough in their own right and the service in from players like Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho is pretty good.

With Daniel Sturridge struggling to overcome injury problems and Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini struggling to find the back of the net, the January transfer window may prove to be a solution.

Of course, Brendan Rodgers may feel that the £16m he spent on Mario Balotelli a few months back should have covered this problem. However, given that this clearly hasn’t been the case, he’s going to have to go back to the drawing board.

He can’t afford to keep piling pressure on the shoulders of Raheem Sterling, who’s still way too young to be his club’s main man.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Brendan Rodgers is considering spending a little extra on Divock Origi to bring him to Anfield six months earlier than originally planned.

Liverpool have already agreed a £10.2m deal for the Belgian centre-forward. If things stay as they currently are, Origi will arrive at the club next summer. Alternatively, The Reds may well spend an additional £3.1m in order to bring him to the club this January. In total, that would bring Divock’s price-tag up to £13.3m, which is a lot of money for a young player.

This is especially true when you consider his goal-scoring record. In 25 appearances for Lille, Origi has scored 4 goals this season. Last year he scored 6 in 35 appearances. He could well blossom into the real deal, but he doesn’t strike me as the solution for Liverpool at this current moment in time.

If they’re to spend more money this January, they need to make sure that they’re signing a striker with a proven track record. Anything else would strike me as a misstep. Divock Origi can wait until next summer.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool spend £13.3m on Divock Origi, or wait a few months more for a cheaper deal?
