De GeaSince signing Victor Valdes on an 18 month deal, speculation has been rife about David De Gea’s future at Manchester United. Why would Louis Van Gaal sign a top quality talent like that, when he’s already got the world’s most in-form keeper at his club? Will Valdes really be content to play second fiddle? Is there something going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about?

It’s not entirely clear. Still, I think it’s fair to say that it’s going to be interesting to watch this situation play out.

The various newspapers across Britain are having their say on the matter. According to The Metro, De Gea is ‘holding out for a switch to Real Madrid’. This is a rumour that’s dogged the Spaniard throughout his time at Old Trafford. No matter how well he performs and how happy he looks, pundits are content to claim that he’s on his way out of the club.

There’s no way to know whether this story is true, but the aforementioned source does provide some grizzly details. They claim that Real Madrid may be willing to offer as much as £25m for United’s keeper (I’d argue that he’s worth at least £10m more than that, given his current purple patch) and that the player in question is ‘seriously open to the deal’.

If that’s true, then Real Madrid are in a position of power. They can use the player’s desire to leave to help lower his price-tag.

Quite why Manchester United would want to sell De Gea is beyond me, but they are ready to replace him with Victor Valdes, should that be necessary. The ex-Barcelona man isn’t as sprightly as he used to be, but he’s still a safe pair of hands. I’d personally love to see him get a proper run-out in the Premier League.

As it happens, that possibility is starting to look ever more likely by the day.

What’s your take? Why did Manchester United sign Victor Valdes? What does the future hold for David De Gea?
