Mats HummelsWith Manchester United on the hunt for a quality centre-back (or two), it wouldn’t surprise me if they to go big in the remaining days of the January transfer window (there’s not long left now!). Manchester United have a habit of throwing money at their problems, after all.

There must be a reason why The Red Devils continue to pick up links to Borussia Dortmund’s star centre-back, Mats Hummels. He’s widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world. He’s highly experienced. He’s won a World Cup. He’s been in a Champions League final. He’s the captain of his club side. He’s got a huge price-tag.

He sounds like a typical Manchester United target to me.

Arsenal had previously been intrigued by the big German, but since their interest in (the considerably cheaper) Gabriel Paulista has increased, they’ve dropped out of the race for Hummels. Indeed, The Express claim that ‘Arsenal are no longer interested in Mats Hummels’.

The source claims that United are hoping to leverage this increased bargaining power to lower Hummels’ price-tag. They suggest that a £35m deal could be on the cards.

That’s still a huge amount of cash. Whether it’s outside Manchester United’s financial reach remains to be seen. Having spent big during the summer, it’s not clear whether The Red Devils will have much money left over.

If they can scrape enough cash together, however, they’ll be getting one hell of a player. Fans won’t have forgotten the impact that Rio Ferdinand made at the club during his tenure at Old Trafford. I can’t help but feel that Mats Hummels might play a similar role in the future (if Manchester United can seal a deal for the big German).

It also strikes me that Mats Hummels would be a good fit for Premier League football. He’s tall, he’s physically commanding and he doesn’t let opposition forwards bully him.

In many ways, £35m seems like a fair price for a man of his ability.

What’s your take? Is Mats Hummels the answer to all of Manchester United’s defensive problems?
