ColemanIn Manchester United’s search for a new defender, they truly have been linked to all and sundry. Some of these players look like a good fit for The Red Devils (for instance, Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels or Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar), whilst others probably aren’t so well suited (let’s not name names).

There seems to be a lot going on behind the scenes. Manchester United aren’t afraid to throw money at their problems, so I’m sure that Louis Van Gaal is going to be a busy boy this January.

Manchester United can’t seem to get through a transfer window without getting linked to one of Everton’s key players. Not so long ago, United were looking at Leighton Baines. Now, according to The Metro, The Red Devils have set their sights on Everton defender Seamus Coleman.

I’d argue that he’s the better option of the two. For a start, he’s younger (he’s 26-years-old and he’s about to hit his peak) and he’s got a longer career ahead of him. As things currently stand, he’s also in better form.

Louis Van Gaal is clearly unconvinced by Rafael, so a move for Seamus Coleman does look like a logical step. The Republic of Ireland international has a decent amount of experience for a player of his age (including 25 caps for his country and 159 appearances for Everton) and he won’t need any time to acclimatize to the Premier League.

He’s as good going forward as he is at defending. He’s an excellent crosser and he even managed to chip in with 7 goals this season (he already has three this time around). It’s easy enough to see him making an impact in a Manchester United shirt.

The aforementioned source claims that he could be available for £20m. That strikes me as a fair price for a top player. If Louis Van Gaal has the budget to make it happen, then I hope he does.

What’s your take? Could Seamus Coleman move to Old Trafford this January?
