Luis SuarezWe’ve seen some bizarre transfer rumours pop up already this January. I would argue that this one trumps all the others: according to The Metro, The Gunners (and Chelsea) are in the market to sign Luis Suarez.

Perhaps they’re lining up a £75,000,001 bid for the man who cost Barcelona £75m last summer?

I can believe that Chelsea would be interested in the player. Perhaps Jose Mourinho is looking at Manchester City’s interest in Swansea City’s main man, Wilfried Bony, and he’s trying to make the following statement: anything you can do, I can do better. The Blues already have Diego Costa, but Mourinho does like to double-down on quality from time-to-time.

Arsenal, on the other hand, aren’t known for their big money signings (even if there have been signs that things are starting to change in this regard). It’s difficult to see them stumping up enough cash to sign Luis Suarez.

As I’ve hinted above, The Gunners do have a bit of previous with Luis Suarez. The Gunners tried to sign Luis Suarez two summers ago by triggering the man’s release clause, but were essentially made to look a bit foolish by Liverpool. In the end Arsene Wenger had to skulk away with his tail between his legs. Could this mid-level humiliation be fueling Arsene Wenger’s desire to sign this player in the future?

Who knows. One thing that stands in Arsenal’s favour is Luis Suarez’s form. In his first 13 appearances for Barca, the Uruguayan has found the back of the net 4 times. That’s not a return that’s becoming of a player with his price-tag. Could the Spanish powerhouse try to force him out?

I seriously doubt it. By all accounts, Suarez was excellent during Barcelona’s 5-0 demolition of Elche. He set up Neymar’s opening goal before grabbing one for himself five minutes later. He finally seems to be finding some semblance of form, following a tough start to the season.

Only a club like Chelsea could afford to tempt him away. Arsenal, on the other hand, will probably have to look elsewhere.

What’s your take? Could Arsenal really compete for Luis Suarez?
