Could Arsenal really be in the market for Petr Cech?

Cech3Every now and then Wojciech Szczesny makes the kind of mistake that sees The Gunners pick up links to new goalkeepers. Against Southampton, he made two such mistakes.

The first involved him running out to meet an on-rushing goalkeeper when he really should have stayed on his line. The second involved him tackling his own player, gifting possession back to The Saints in the process.

There was a look of resignation on the Polish international’s face after his second blunder. It was almost as though he realised that this game would have a major impact on his career.

Szczesny is a top talent. I have little doubt about that. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes. He’s the same rash, impetuous individual he ever was. He’s a red card waiting to happen and his shot-stopping ability doesn’t counteract his poor distribution and atrocious decision making.

Arsenal can do better. As a result, they’re likely to get linked to a raft of new options this January.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Petr Cech could prove to be a good fit for The Gunners. The Chelsea star is currently warming the bench for The Blues (taking part in the occasional cup game when the opportunity arises), but I’d argue that he’s far to good to be doing that.

He’s 32-years-old now, but that’s relatively young for a goalkeeper. Remember how good Edwin van der Sar was, right up until the end? What about Gianluigi Buffon? Petr Cech is still more than capable of making a major impact at a big club. If Jose Mourinho isn’t willing to play him, then hopefully he’ll be willing to sell him.

Mourinho won’t want to sell to a rival, but he can’t hold the player hostage either. Szczesny is still young enough that he’s likely to make it through this blip. In the meantime, The Gunners need somebody they can rely on.

Maybe that man will be Petr Cech?

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for this Chelsea star? Would Jose Mourinho consider selling the Czech Republic International?
