Memphis DepayHaving spent so much during the summer, it’s perhaps not all that surprising that The Red Devils have been so quiet during the January transfer window. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a little disappointing. Manchester United have been better than they were last year, but they’re still a long-way off of their free-flowing best and they continue to display weaknesses across the pitch.

I think it’s fair to say that they could still use one-or-two new additions. In particular, they need to bolster their defense and add a little more threat down the flanks, in order to get the most out of their deadly strikers.

This leads me neatly onto The Express‘s claim that Manchester United are still interested in signing PSV wing-wizard, Memphis Depay. Unfortunately, they’re not the only interested party. According to the source, both United and Tottenham have been keeping tabs on the young Dutchman and are now mulling over whether to make £15m bids.

It’s easy to see why Spurs might be interested. They continue to offer diminishing returns down the flanks, where players like Aaron Lennon and Erik Lamela just aren’t producing the goods (not on a regular basis, any way).

Manchester United face similar issues of inconsistency from players like Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young (and Nani for that matter, but he’s on loan with Sporting Lisbon at the moment). Even Angel Di Maria hasn’t been all that impressive.

Memphis Depay on the other hand? He’s been a consistent threat for the last two seasons now. Last year he played 43 times for PSV, scored 16 goals and made 10 assists. This year he’s already well on his way to improving on those figures. He’s played 20 times, scored 16 goals and made 6 assists.

It’s easy to see what all the fuss is about. If he’s available for just £15m, Manchester United or Tottenham could be set for a bargain.

You’d have to think that The Red Devils have the financial fortitude to see off Spurs’ interest (especially with a Dutchman in charge at Old Trafford). Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal is up for a transfer battle.

What’s your take? Is Memphis Depay a good option for The Red Devils? Could Tottenham beat them to the punch?
