Daniel Alves (Brazil)At 31-years-old, Barcelona’s star right-back, Dani Alves, has decided the time’s right for him to consider his future. In total, he’s now made 314 appearances for the Spanish powerhouse, in what’s proven to be a remarkable career.

Given that his contract is set to expire this summer, Alves is now eligible to sign a pre-contract with overseas clubs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Manchester United move in at this stage.

The Red Devils are short on options, quality and experience at the back. Louis Van Gaal has spent a fortune on attacking players, but he’s failed to adequately bolster his back-four. This short-coming has been Manchester United’s undoing on numerous occasions this year.

Luckily the January transfer window will provide Van Gaal with an opportunity to right this wrong. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that they’ll bring Dani Alves to Old Trafford this month. That may have to wait until the summer. Check out these comments from the player himself:

Dani Alves is still a major part of Barcelona’s squad (he’s made 17 appearances for them this year) and he’s currently smack-bang in the middle of a title race (something that can’t really be said of Manchester United). Is it any wonder that he’s keen to hang around for a little while longer?

In truth, I’m not sure why he wants to move on at all.

Still, he’s chosen to run his contract down and now a club like Manchester United could end up with a real bargain if they’re willing to be patient. Van Gaal desperately needs new defenders so he may be tempted to try and do business now. In the long-term, however, this would be a mistake.

The Brazilian ace is still one of the quickest, smartest full-backs in world football. He’s tricky enough to beat defenders and he’s got the technique to whip in a neat cross. At the back he’s tough to get past and he’s a reliable presence.

I’d love to see him strut his stuff in the Premier League. Let’s hope that he gets the opportunity.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United try and seal a deal for Dani Alves now?

Dani Alves best days are behind him. United would be better off chasing someone younger like Clyne.
