Tyrone MingsIn Arsenal’s continued search for defensive solidarity they’ve been linked to a number of different, but exciting options. I’m sure Arsenal fans are waiting with baited breath to see who Arsene Wenger will bring in during the January transfer window.

Will it be Borussia Dortmund’s superstar centre-back Mats Hummels? Perhaps it’ll be Real Madrid prodigy, Raphael Varane? Maybe it will be Athletic Bilbao’s well-regarding Frenchman, Aymeric Laporte? Any of these options would be a good choice for The Gunners.

Of course, there’s a good chance that Arsene Wenger will surprise us and sign somebody that nobody expects. This leads me neatly onto The Metro‘s claim that The Professor has his heart set on Ipswich defender Tyrone Mings. I’m sure that this news won’t have Arsenal fans feeling very excited.

After some of the performances that they’ve been witness to thus far this season, I’m sure they’ll feel that drastic measures are necessary. In truth however, it strikes me that Arsenal only really need a couple of decent options at the back – people who are capable of stepping in whenever necessary.

At 21-years-old, Mings is already cuts a very impressive figure. He’s 6 foot 3 inches tall, he’s good in the air and he’s pretty quick along the turf. He’s also not afraid to slam into tackles and break up opposition play.

Off the pitch, he’s earned a reputation for his charitable acts. This doesn’t count for much in a football match, but it’s good to know that Arsenal could be about so sign a thoroughly decent chap.

The aforementioned source claims that Tyrone Mings could set The Gunners back £8m. That’s not a bad fee for a player who has a huge amount of potential. If he continues to improve and develop as a player, there’s a good chance he’s going to blossom into a world-class talent.

That strikes me as something that’s worth investing in, even if he’s not a big name (yet). Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger sees things the same way.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be chasing this 21-year-old Ipswich prodigy?
