Could Nemanja Vidic really be on his way back to Manchester United?

VidicWhen a club is going through a tough time, or a rough period of form, the tabloid media like to take advantage of the situation by posting rumours or transfer gossip that simply wouldn’t fly under normal circumstances. Life in wartime is a whole different kettle of fish, wouldn’t you say?

Manchester United certainly qualify as a club who are going through an extended run of poor form. Yes, they’ve eeked out a few results in recent weeks, but their performances haven’t been all that impressive. They’re still a long way off being as good as they were when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

Part of the problem is the club’s defense. As things currently stand, Louis Van Gaal just doesn’t have enough quality options to call upon. It doesn’t help that both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were sent packing last summer.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United have already agreed a deal to ‘re-sign former captain Nemanja Vidic’ from Inter Milan during the January transfer window. Wait, what?

At 33-years-old, Vidic has struggled to find his feet in Serie A. He’s been roundly criticised for his poor displays and it’s not clear that things are going to get much better. At his age, defenders rarely improve.

As such, it’s hard to believe that Louis Van Gaal would view him as any kind of solution. Surely it would be better to blood some of Manchester United’s young talent, than to spend money to bring a veteran like Vidic back to the club? It just doesn’t make any sense. When aforementioned source signs off their article by noting, ‘What a mad deal…’, you know something’s amiss.

Hopefully this is just a piece of tabloid nonsense, but given what’s happened to Manchester United over the last 18 months or so, I can’t help but worry. Let’s just hope that cooler heads prevail around Old Trafford this January.

What’s your take? Could The Red Devils really be entertaining the idea of bringing Nemanja Vidic back to the club? Isn’t it time to move on?
