Louis_van_Gaal_3004370bManchester United’s re-building project has seen them drop a lot of money on new players over the last couple of years. Since taking over at Old Trafford, Louis Van Gaal has spent £200m on transfers.

I’d argue that given this out-going cash, The Red Devils really should be doing a little bit better. They should be duking it out at the top of the Premier League table, but that may take a little longer than fans were hoping for.

This leads me to a surprise article courtesy of The Metro which suggests that Louis Van Gaal is planning to do a lot more work in the transfer market next summer. They even claim that Manchester United are prepared to spend as much as £100m on new players.

Helpfully, they include a list of names of potential targets that include Mats Hummels, Diego Godin, Dani Alves, Kevin Strootman and Arjen Robben. These are five players that would likely be very difficult to wrestle away from their current clubs. That being said, these look like five players who could make an instant impact at Manchester United and they’d all help to deal with some of the issues that this club has faced thus far this year.

Diego Godin and Mats Hummels would arguably be the two most important new additions. Since losing both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, The Red Devils just haven’t been the same defensively speaking. This experienced duo should get them up and running.

Dani Alves (who might be available on a free transfer next summer) and Kevin Strootman would add a little more steel in the right-back and holding midfielder roles. Then there’s Arjen Robben, who would probably be the most difficult to acquire. There’s no doubting the Dutchman’s talent, but given his age and his price-tag, maybe this is the one player on the list that Van Gaal should steer clear of?

Manchester United do seem to be throwing money at their problems once again, but at least they’re looking at smart targets. If they can bring in two or three of these players, it’s not unreasonable to believe that they may challenge for the title next year.

What’s your take? Who should Manchester United sign during the next couple of transfer windows?
