Cavani4Arsenal’s attack has been much improved by the addition of players like Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck (and the blossoming of Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain), but it’s not unreasonable to believe that they could yet do better. Arsene Wenger’s main priority over the next couple of transfer windows will be fixing his defence, but it wouldn’t be hugely surprising to see him sign a forward (or two).

Of course, given the options that Arsenal currently have, The Professor has no real reason to bring anybody else in unless he happens to be a truly world class striker. That leads me rather neatly into an interesting story that The Express recently published regarding Arsenal and Edinson Cavani.

According to this source, the Uruguayan goal-scoring sensation is willing to consider moving to The Emirates next summer. It’s thought that he’d prefer that eventuality over a move to Manchester United and that he could cost Arsene Wenger as much as £50m.

That’s a lot of money, but given his record (104 goals for Napoli in 138 games and 36 goals in 62 games for Paris Saint Germain), I’d argue that Cavani is worthy of his price-tag. He’s up there with some of the very best strikers in world football and he’d significantly improve this Arsenal side. He’d be another major Arsene Wenger signing.

The Express claim that Cavani has grown discontent with playing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic at PSG. Laurent Blanc often plays him out wide which dilutes his goal-scoring potential. I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity for a new challenge at another top club. When you’re that good you must grow tired of Ligue 1 fairly quickly.

Whether The Gunners have enough cash to win this deal remains to be seen. PSG don’t have any real reason to sell (unless the player kicks up a fuss). Still, if Arsene Wenger wants this enough, he can make it happen. Let’s hope that he’s able to hold his nerve.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal really be interested in Edinson Cavani? Do they need to get their priorities in order?
