firminoManchester United spent a lot of money in the summer, but many of their signings are taking a while to settle in. Perhaps it was foolish for us to believe that so many new recruits would be able to hit the ground running at the same time.

There’s little doubt that players like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao will come good eventually. The Argentine ace has a fantastic cross on him and the Colombian hit-man can score goals for fun.

Still, I can’t help but feel that there’s a void in the centre of Manchester United’s midfield. With Juan Mata struggling to make an impact (despite his goal against Crystal Palace), Marouane Fellaini offering diminishing returns and Michael Carrick out injured, this position is certainly going to need assessing during the January transfer window.

It’ll be interesting to see what Louis Van Gaal decides to do. According to The Metro, The Red Devils have their sights set on Hoffenheim’s talented attacking midfielder, Roberto Firmino. The source suggests that this will ‘annoy’ Liverpool, who are also interested in the brilliant Brazilian.

Getting their hands on a good player is one thing, but getting your hands on a good player and winding up your old rivals – now that’s a deal worth pursuing.

Last season Firmino ended up the fourth highest goal-scorer in the Bundesliga (with 16 goals) and the second highest assister (with 12). He’s clearly extremely effective in the final third. It’s easy to see why Manchester United (and Liverpool) might be interested.

He hasn’t slowed down this season. Given that he’s only 23-years-old, there’s a good chance that he’s going to get even better. He’s certainly a player with enough quality to make an impact at Old Trafford.

The aforementioned source claims that a deal for Firmino could cost as much as £25m. That’s a lot of money, but I’d love to see Louis Van Gaal bite the bullet with this one. It could make all the difference in the battle to bring success back to Manchester United.

What’s your take? Is Roberto Firmino the right man for Manchester United?
