ReusI’m sure that there are a huge number of clubs who are currently monitoring Marco Reus’s contractual situation over at Borussia Dortmund. The German ace is one of the best wide-men in the world and if there’s a chance that he could be available as part of a cut-price deal in the future, then a large number of team’s are sure to jump at the opportunity.

Dortmund have been trying to tie Reus down to a new long-term deal, but there seems to have been little movement in that regard. As things currently stand, a clause will activate in his contract next summer which will permit other clubs to sign him for a smaller fee (in other words, his release clause will go live). With his club currently struggling in the Bundesliga (despite performing well in the Champions League), it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to end up moving on.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are all considering making a move for Reus. Can you blame them? Unfortunately for this trio, it seems that Manchester City are currently leading the race. The aforementioned source suggests that the Sky Blues are preparing a ‘bumper contract offer’ that could be worth up to £10m-a-year.

That’s enough money to turn any player’s head. With City in constant contention for silverware, the German ace will surely be tempted by the prospect of a move to The Etihad.

As such, Arsenal need to do everything in their power to ensure that they beat Manuel Pellegrini and co. to the punch. With players like Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil all providing diminishing returns, The Gunners would be wise to target talented players like Marco Reus. He could have as big an impact for Arsenal as Alexis Sanchez has had in his short stay in North London.

Arsenal may not be able to compete financially with Manchester City, but they can offer the German guaranteed game-time and a style of football that will be suitable to his free-flowing attacking philosophy. The Gunners just need to play to their strengths.

Either way, watching this transfer battle play out will be fascinating.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal compete with Manchester City to sign Marco Reus?
