Why Arsenal are right to chase this £25m Portuguese ace:

|

Cedric (Sporting)With Arsenal stretched to the limit defensively, there’s a good chance that Arsene Wenger will take to the transfer window in an attempt to rectify the situation. This is probably something that he should have done during the summer, but that’s not to be helped at this stage.

All The Professor can do is wait for his next opportunity and take it.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Gunners are considering activating Sporting Lisbon star, Cedric’s release clause during the January transfer window. If they do so, they’ll be sure to attract plenty of attention. After all, the Portuguese ace’s release clause is currently set at £25.5m. He’s not going to come cheap.

Then again, his reputation has skyrocketed over the last 12 months. The 23-year-old right-back is known for his dynamic running, his pace, his direct attacking nature and his threat on the ball. On his day he can be a real nightmare for defenders to deal with.

Luckily, he’s also pretty handy himself, defensively speaking. He tracks back well, marks his man and he’s not afraid to put in a tough tackle. You get the feeling that he would fit in well in the Premier League.

The aforementioned source also carries quotes from the player’s agent, who suggests that a move to The Emirates could be possible. When questioned about Arsenal’s interest, Miguel Veloso responded:

‘We are happy his work is being recognised. Right now, we continue to negotiate the renewal of the contract between Cedric and Sporting. But nothing is agreed. All scenarios are possible [in January].’

That’s not exactly confirmation of Arsenal’s interest, but it’s not a denial either.

Arsenal know exactly what they have to do if they’re to get their man. They need to decide whether he is worth £25.5m or not (that’s a Luke Shaw-esque figure!). If he is, then let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger snaps him up as early as possible during the January transfer window.

What’s your take? Is Cedric the right man for The Gunners? Who else should they consider?

I strongly believe that what arsenal mostly need now is a natural central defender and a natural defensive midfielder.
