Mattia DestroThe Gunners bought Danny Welbeck in the summer, but they’re still picking up links to a fresh crop of new strikers. Perhaps this has something to do with all the grumbling that Lukas Podolski has been doing in recent times.

The German has been growing ever more dissatisfied with his role at Arsenal and barring a miracle, there’s a good chance that he’ll move on during the January window. He hasn’t been utilised as a striker on too many occasions throughout his time at The Emirates, but his exit would mean that Arsene Wenger is down another forward option.

As we know, this is one area of the pitch that The Professor likes to keep as strong as possible. If one player leaves, there’s a good chance that another one will be brought in.

This surely explains the club’s interest in Roma’s talented striker, Mattia Destro. The Italian international has a name like a comic book villain, but he also happens to have a rather good goal-scoring record. In 49 games for the Serie A side, he’s found the back of the net 22 times.

Better still, he’s only 23-years-old. He’s still going to improve in the coming years and will have even more to offer over the course of his next contract. It’s easy to see why a club like Arsenal might be interested. The player himself has even spoken out about what the future holds for him:

‘Arsenal for me? The rumours are good, I’m happy for them. This is the proof that I’m doing my work well.’ (Source: The Metro)

These comments come off as a bit of a shoulder shrug, but he doesn’t exactly rule out a move does he? He’s currently struggling for game time at the Italian capital and it’d be interesting to see whether an Arsenal bid would turn his head.

Let’s just hope that Mattia Destro proves to be a better addition for Arsenal than Mario Balotelli has been for Liverpool.

What’s your take? Is Mattia Destro the right man for Arsenal?
