Daniel Alves (Brazil)With Arsenal’s defense precariously short of options at the moment, they’re sure to pick up links to plenty of fresh new options during the January transfer window. In truth, this is something that should have been dealt with during the summer transfer window.

Arsene Wenger knew he was going to lose both Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna, but did little to deal with this issue. At least the January transfer window will provide the Frenchman with an opportunity to right this wrong.

In particular, The Gunners have been picking up links to Barcelona’s star right-back, Dani Alves. The Brazilian ace has less than a year left on his current contract and could be available as a free transfer by the time that the summer rolls around. Alternatively, Barca may consider cashing in on Alves in January, whilst they’ll still get something out of the sale.

Needless to say, this is a player that Arsenal should be interested in. He’s a hugely experienced individual (309 appearances for Barcelona, 246 appearances for Sevilla and 79 caps for the Spanish international side). He’s also got bags of pace, intelligence and drive. He gets up and down the flanks extremely quickly and he’s effective in the final third.

He’s always been a better attacker than he has a defender, but in every respect he’d be an improvement over Arsenal’s current options, Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy. This signing would allow Chambers to establish himself as a centre-back, a role that he looks better suited for.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, they’re going to face plenty of competition for Alves’ signature. The Express claim that both Manchester United and Juventus are interested in the Spanish ace. Why wouldn’t they be? He’s the real deal.

Financially speaking, Arsenal are in a pretty solid position at the moment. They’ve got the cash necessary to go head to head with these clubs should they need to. Given the state of Arsene Wenger’s defense at this moment in time, I hope that he’s well and truly up for a battle this January.

What’s your take? Where does Dani Alves’ future lie?
