Ezequiel Garay (Argetina)Manchester United have been linked to Argentine ace Ezequiel Garay for quite some time now. Rumours about a potential move for the 28-year-old have popped up in the last three iterations of the transfer window. Could January finally provide The Red Devils with an opportunity to close the deal?

Interestingly enough, Manchester United are even weaker than ever from a defensive perspective. Louis Van Gaal spent a lot of money bolstering his attacking during the summer, but he failed to bring in enough defenders to balance the squad. The need for a player like Ezequiel Garay is more pressing than ever.

The Argentine defender moved from Benfica to Zenit St. Petersburg last summer, but The Express suggest that this has done little to alter Manchester United’s interest. It also claims that Ezequiel’s World Cup performances have inflated his price-tag from £12m to £18m. You get the feeling that the longer United wait, the larger his valuation will be.

That’s no small chunk of change, but it’s certainly within The Red Devils’ financial wheelhouse. They spent big in the summer and I’m sure Louis Van Gaal will be backed in January if he wants to fix his defense.

Garay should fit in nicely alongside his compatriot, Marcos Rojo in the centre of United’s defense. Both players are mobile, intelligent and tough. They slam into tackles, work hard and are usually very effective. The fact that both individuals would play together for club and country makes this an even better deal for Manchester United. This would provide them with plenty of opportunity to form an effective partnership with one another.

Whatever the case, Van Gaal will have to bring in somebody during the summer. Manchester United can’t afford to sit still. After their draw with Chelsea it’s time to kick on and start climbing up the table.

Still, I for one will be crossing my fingers that The Red Devils are finally able to close this deal.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United snap up this long-term transfer target? Is Ezequiel Garay the right man for the job?
