When a talented forward is involved, The Red Devils can’t seem to help themselves. Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time with the club, Manchester United have worked hard to ensure that they have a forward line-up that’s overloaded with talent.
At the moment, they can call upon talented players like Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao. As attacking line-ups go, that’s tough to beat – and that’s after they sent Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez packing during the summer transfer window. Manchester United may be struggling in other departments, but upfront, they’re still very impressive.
Still, with Robin Van Persie getting on in years and Wayne Rooney offering diminished returns, it wouldn’t surprise me if Louis Van Gaal wanted to add one more striker to his squad.
This must surely explain why The Red Devils sent Ryan Giggs to watch Abdul Majeed Waris in action for Turkish side Trabzonspor last Thursday night. I wonder what the Welsh wing-wizard thought of the Ghanaian.
At 23-years-old, Waris has earned a fantastic reputation, but he’s hardly been setting the world alight this year. Last year, he found the back of the net 9 times in 16 games, whilst on loan with Valenciennes. This season he’s made 13 appearances, but has yet to open his account for Trabzonspor.
It’s tough to know what to make of him. Is he just going through a poor patch of form (like a certain Mario Balotelli), or is he genuinely not up to snuff? Let’s hope that Ryan Gigg’s scouting mission helps the club to decide one way or another.
My feeling is that United need to add one more striker to their squad and that Abdul Waris could be the man for the job. He won’t arrive at Old Trafford expecting to be a regular member of the club’s first team. He’ll know that he needs to bide his time and work hard.
That makes him a good candidate. I just wonder if Ryan Giggs and co. feel the same way.
