Here’s a rumour that I never expected to see: according to The Express, Liverpool have their eyes set on Chelsea star, Andre Schurrle.
Jose Mourinho seems to have mixed feelings towards the German, but there’s no doubting that he’s an extremely talented individual. He’s quick, he’s smart and he’s a good finisher (he’s scored 11 in 54 for The Blues). His manager has been quick to highlight his inconsistencies, but I can’t help but feel that he needs regular game time if he’s to really kick on in his career.
Liverpool could offer him this, but is that really the next logical step in his career?
Perhaps the Liverpool of last season could have been a good fit for him. Unfortunately, things have changed quickly over the last six months. Since Luis Suarez left in the summer, Brendan Rodgers has looked a little lost. He’s tried out so many different systems (and personnel), but none of them seem to be paying any dividends.
He utilized a similar ‘everything and the kitchen sink’ approach during the summer transfer market, with similarly limited success. One of the players he brought in was Lazar Markovic, who plays down the flanks like Andre Schurrle. Signing the German could hold this former Benfica star back.
Still, I’m sure that Liverpool fans would prefer to see an experienced individual like Schurrle throw on a red shirt. I have little doubt that the German would improve The Reds. I’m just not sure why you’d move from Stamford Bridge to Anfield at this moment in time.
Under Jose Mourinho, you’re always in with a good shot of silverware. Unfortunately, that just isn’t the case for Liverpool at the moment.
The Express suggests that Schurrle could be available for £25m. That’s a lot of money, but if he’s willing to entertain the move, The Reds should consider coughing up the cash. He’s got Premier League experience, he’s got plenty of ambition and he knows what it takes to win. Still, it’s going to take some convincing by Brendan Rodgers to get this deal to go ahead.
