PiqueWith Manchester United in desperate need of a few new defensive recruits, this January transfer window is sure to be an interesting time. Other clubs will be well aware of The Red Devils limitations in this area and may well be prepared to play hardball.

By waiting until their options were limited, Louis Van Gaal and co have curtailed their negotiation power.

Luckily The Red Devils have more than enough cash to tempt good clubs to sell their top players. Hopefully this proves to be the case when the January transfer window re-opens.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of talented centre-backs on the market nowadays. It’s hard to find players who are of a similar level of quality to departed players like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. If Van Gaal does manage to find somebody he likes, he’d do well to battle hard for that man’s signature.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are interested in re-signing former star, Gerard Pique. The Spaniard never really fit in during his first spell at Old Trafford, but he managed to quickly make a name for himself when he returned to Barcelona. He’s been a fixture at the Nou Camp for a number of years now, but his time finally seems to be up.

He’s fallen out of favour under Luis Enrique and it wouldn’t surprise me if he sought out regular game time elsewhere. Unfortunately for Manchester United, the aforementioned source claims that he would favour a move to Chelsea. They even go as far as to suggest that Jose Mourinho has lodged a £23.6m bid for the Spaniard.

It looks like The Blues have stolen a match on Manchester United, but there’s no use giving up yet. Pique is a top quality player with plenty of experience at the very top level. If he’s available for this kind of price, The Red Devils would be foolish not to dive on in.

They simply need to make it clear to Pique that he’d be valued at Old Trafford (unlike during his first stay) and ensure that they offer him a bumper pay-package. Then we can all sit back and wait to see if he changes his mind.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United continue to battle it out for Gerard Pique with Chelsea?
