Christoph KramerArsenal’s season seems to have gone from okay, to bad, to quite good back down to bad. They soared to a 3-0 lead over Belgian minnows Anderlecht, before ending the game with a 3-3 draw. On a night where they could have secured qualification for the next round of the Champions League, I think it’s fair to say that they let themselves down.

Whilst their attack seems to have clicked into gear (thanks in no small part to the wit and verve of Alexis Sanchez), their defense continues to disappoint. I’d argue that this is more down to a lack of options rather than a lack of quality. Still, one area where Arsenal are lacking in both is the defensive midfielder role.

With Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini both getting on in years, it’s time for Arsene Wenger to start considering other options. The sooner The Professor can add a bit of class in this area of the pitch, the better. The Gunners need their own version of Nemanja Matic.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are keen on signing Germany international Christoph Kramer during the January transfer window. Given how much the 23-year-old’s profile has improved over the last 12 months, this is very exciting news.

He’s currently in the final year of a two-year loan deal with Borussia Monchengladbach, but he mostly caught pundit’s eyes for his displays during the World Cup. He’s energetic, athletic and dynamic. He’s not afraid to leap into tackles, tussle for the ball and make a general nuisance of himself. It’s easy enough to see him fitting in nicely to a Premier League side.

The aforementioned source claims that Arsenal have sent a scout to watch him in action. If this is true, it’s evidence that Arsene Wenger is genuinely interested in the player. It’s thought that he could be available for as little as £12m (a relative bargain for a player who is very much on the rise), so The Professor would be foolish not to take his interest a step further.

What’s your take? Is Christoph Kramer the right option for The Gunners?
